Guy Ritchie defends casting David Beckham in King Arthur... but the former footballer insists he won't be pursuing acting after fans savage his cameo role

David Beckham's acting debut may have been savaged by fans on social media, but filmmaker Guy Ritchie has defended casting the former footballer in his new film King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword.

Speaking to Good Morning Britain at the London premiere on Wednesday, the 48-year-old director ignored the backlash as he praised his friend, calling the star a 'talented actor'.

Despite the kind words, David went on to state that it wouldn't be a new career path for him, but merely a new 'challenge' that he wanted to take on

Guy enthused: 'He’s a talented actor, very confident on camera', with the ex-husband ofMadonna adding: 'He was quite a tasty footballer wasn’t he?'
Leading man Charlie Hunnam then quipped he was intimidated by David's good looks, revealing: 'I said "listen pal, this is my movie and I want to be the most handsome man on screen!"'.

However, whilst his co-stars were full of praise, David won't be pursuing a career in the movies.

He said: 'I haven't taken a step into acting. It's me doing something I love with a friend. It's not a new career or something I want to go into.

'I've always liked a challenge and usually it's to do with sport but with this I didn't know if I was going to be OK.'

He added: 'It was daunting but Charlie [Hunnam] was great and he gave me guidelines. Guy is scary as a boss but he's a friend so you know he's going to take care of you.'

David previously appeared as himself in football movies Goal! and Goal II: Living the Dream and also had a brief non-speaking cameo in Guy's 2015 action film Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Despite the online furore over his part, defiant David came out triumphantly sharing a behind-the-scenes look at his time on set of Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword to his 36.6million Instagram fans on Wednesday.

In the clip, the 42-year-old former Manchester United player discussed about working with his director pal and the process of turning into his character battleguard Trigger.

At the beginning the candid snippet, fans got an insight into the work that went into transforming him into his scarred character.

Being fixed with a number of prosthetics, the father-of-four appeared relaxed as he reflected on his new appearance, commenting: 'To see what the guys did to me was incredible'.

The former Manchester United star opened up about working with his best pal and admitted that Ritchie 'looked after him' as he gushed about the director's work environment.

David boasted a scarred face and hooked nose for the film
He continued: 'The good thing about working with Guy is that he's a good friend of mine. He looked after me in many different ways. I trust him.

'My role is pretty small in this and I had one or two lines. I've been around Guy's movies before and it's a great place to be. You kind of love that community feel.'
Coming after the flood of negative comments about his performance, David defiantly captioned the clip: 'It was a pleasure to work with the @kingarthurmovie team on such an amazing film #KingArthur'.

His intransigent display comes after his acting debut has been widely panned by movie fans following the release of the King Arthur trailer on Tuesday.

The former footballer made his silver screen debut in his pal Guy Ritchie's highly-awaited summer blockbuster alongside film stars Charlie Hunnam and Eric Bana, which will hit UK cinemas on May 19.

Playing hardened battleguard Trigger in the flick, David's attempts appeared to fall flat for film lovers as they took to social media in their droves to pan his debut.
