The scramble
for the governorship ticket in Kogi State, under the umbrella of the All
Progressives Congress (APC) is assuming a frightening dimension. The search for
an acceptable candidate was neccessitated by the sudden death, penultimate
Saturday, of the Party's original flagbear, Prince Abubakar Audu, after the
electoral body, INEC, declared the election inconclusive and announced a re-run
in some local governments.
Violence
erupted this afternoon at the party headquarters in Abuja, when some thugs
stormed the party secretariat. Reports say the youths came in a number of
buses, ostensibly to attack the party's choice of candidate, Yahaya Bello, who
was at the Secretariat for a meeting with the party leadership.
On sighting Bello, who arrived at about 2.48p.m, the youths went on rampage, attempting to attack him, breaking the windscreen of a number of vehicles in the
process.
It took the effort of security personnel to smuggle Bello from the venue. Observers say the rampaging youths must be the supporters of James Faleke, the running mate to late Audu, who is demanding the party ticket, but this has not been independently confirmed. The supplementary election is scheduled for this Saturday.
