The family
of a student who died in a crash along with his teenage passenger today said he
was a fantastic driver” and “we just want to know what happened.
Akmol
Hussain, 23, was behind the wheel of his BMW near Marsh Wall on the Isle of
Dogs when it collided with a van and flipped at about 5.25am on Friday.
He and an
18-year-old girl in the back seat were killed. A 23-year-old man who was in the
front passenger seat broke his arm and is recovering in hospital.
Mr Hussain’s
brother Akthar Hussain, 28, said: “We just want to know what happened that
night and for there to be a full investigation.
“He told my
mum he was going to drop one of his friends off and was coming back. We don’t
know what happened after that. He was a fantastic driver, much better than me.
Our mother felt safer in his car than anyone else’s.
He had the
BMW since September and loved it. He was always cleaning it and wanted to
maintain it. It was a nice black, sporty BMW.
It’s
devastating. My father is a strong guy but my mother is in pieces. We are all
still in shock.”

Akmol
Hussain, the third of five siblings, grew up in Stepney and attended Stepney
Green Boys School and Tower Hamlets College. He was in the second year of a
business degree at London South Bank University.
His brother
said: “Akmol was a popular guy in Shadwell, everyone knew him. He was very
generous and loving.
All the
shops around here knew him as he’d help them out if they needed anything fixed
on the computer or telephone. He was good with technology. The thing most
people remember about him was his smile. He was a happy, humble guy.”
The family
said they do not know the identity of the girl killed in the crash, which took
place near the junction with Manchester Road on Friday.
A tribute
left there said: “Kay, I can’t believe this. I’m still shocked. I’m already
missing you.
The times
we laughed together. One of my best friends, you will always be remembered.”
The van
driver was not arrested. A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: “Inquiries into
the circumstances of the incident continue.”
